I am Esther Chávez, the first Afro-Peruvian actress.

I grew up in poverty, without schooling, without formal acting training, without access to stages, but with the soul of an artist. What came from me was organic, visceral. I acted from feeling. Acting was not taught to me by books; Life itself taught me. 

On screen, I was often seen as the nanny, the maid, the humble woman.  It never hurt me :   I loved acting.

My face, my body, my skin color were my truth. I did not receive the recognition many others did, but I opened doors for those who would come after me.
